About Me
- Eric O. Rogers, Ph. D.
- Born in Southern California in 1947, I spent my early years watching Sgt Preston, reading Jack London and dreaming of living in Alaska. In 1970 I was drafted out of graduate school, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, trained as a navigator in KC-135’s, and served in Viet Nam. While assigned to Mather AFB in Sacramento I met and married the love of my life, Marti. After the war I returned to school and completed my Ph. D. in Physics at the University of Washington in 1981. For 11 years I worked for Shell Oil in Houston as a geophysicist. In 1992, chasing my childhood dream, I left Shell and Marti and I moved the family to Anchorage. Iditarod has been a growing passion since I started following the race in the late 1970’s. While living in Houston in the 1980’s, I subscribed to the Anchorage Daily News by mail for the month of March to follow the race. My long distance bill dramatically increased when I discovered the phone room for updates. I volunteered for the 1992 race, my first while living in Alaska, and continued to volunteer until I ran the race as the oldest rookie in 2006.
